SITUATION (Fictitious brief)

A magazine (client) is looking to publish a short story in the form of a triptych to fill up a section. I am commissioned to provide content for that section based on pre-specified requirements. The final format will be both digital and print. The theme presented will be on 'Femininity'.

CONCEPT

With traditionally and cultural stereotypes and how society has a particular view of what femininity is through things like way of living, fashion and identity, women would have to present themselves as feminine in some ways such as a young girl being forced to wear a dress. They may also have to behave in more feminine ways to ‘fit-in’ to society while there are also increasing number of women achieving to be strong independent women in today’s society.

These widely-held views and stereotypical traits of femininity shape beliefs about our own and others’ abilities in becoming our true self and may make one question themselves of their own inner identity and how others may affect one’s own thinking.

In the Triptych, I would like to show oneself in upholding self-confidence among stereotypical feminine traits and how people view it in the 3 frames such as embracing & getting comfortable with our own levels of feminine qualities as opposed to what society view – e.g. girly, soft.

RATIONALE

In this Triptych series of 3 images taken at a maze location, I would like to present the story of how women can be comfortable and confident in their own skin by finding one’s self. As flowers are shown in all three frames, it symbolizes femininity and the woman in the pictures to be comfortable with her own levels femininity.

The translucent chiffon cloth covering the woman in the frame show her being trapped in her own mind, how she should be herself. And by looking at herself in the mirror showing signs of contemplation, she would understand that being herself make her free – embracing her feminine qualities. Lastly, she radiates self- confidence in the final frame, looking slightly downwards, showing that she does not have to behave fully in the stereotypical feminine way – i.e. dressing in a dress,
be modest, be graceful or elegant etc.
